How to Steal a Million (1966)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

A woman must steal a statue from a Paris museum to help conceal her father's art forgeries.

The Quartile Take

A charming and sophisticated caper comedy buoyed enormously by the irresistible chemistry between Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole. The plot is pleasingly constructed with a fun heist at its center, though it follows fairly conventional romantic caper beats. Acting is the standout — Hepburn and O'Toole elevate every scene with wit and elegance that few performers could match. William Wyler's direction is assured and the Paris setting is beautifully rendered, though the cinematography is handsome rather than visually inventive. Novelty is moderate — it fits comfortably within the swinging-60s caper genre alongside similar fare, distinguished more by its stars than its conception. The ending is satisfying and warm without being particularly surprising.
