A teenager transitions from female to male, and his family must come to terms with that fact.
3 Generations tackles a then-underrepresented subject—a teenage FTM transition and its ripple effects across three generations of women—giving it some topical novelty, but the execution is largely formulaic. The script leans on predictable conflict-resolution beats and underdeveloped character arcs, making the plot feel thin for its ambitions. The cast, including Elle Fanning and Susan Sarandon, delivers solid if uneven performances that elevate the material somewhat. Cinematography is workmanlike and unremarkable. The ending resolves too neatly and quickly, undercutting the emotional weight the film had been building.
