One man's journey to discover the bitter truth about sugar. Damon Gameau embarks on a unique experiment to document the effects of a high sugar diet on a healthy body, consuming only foods that are commonly perceived as 'healthy'. Through this entertaining and informative journey, Damon highlights some of the issues that plague the sugar industry, and where sugar lurks on supermarket shelves.
That Sugar Film is an entertaining health documentary in the vein of Super Size Me, with Damon Gameau conducting a personal experiment consuming hidden sugars in 'healthy' foods. The concept is engaging and the presentation is lively and accessible, with creative visual flourishes that elevate it above standard documentary fare. However, the film leans heavily on the established personal-experiment documentary format popularized by Morgan Spurlock, limiting its novelty. The acting/presenter work is affable but thin, and the conclusion feels somewhat abrupt and preachy without offering truly fresh solutions or revelations. Cinematography is competent and occasionally inventive but not exceptional. A solid, crowd-pleasing health doc that informs without breaking new ground.
