Five ordinary teens must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.
The 2017 Power Rangers reboot attempts a darker, Chronicle-esque tone with its teen ensemble but struggles with an uneven script that spends too long in setup before rushing its climax. The character work is surprisingly earnest and the diverse cast performs well given the material, elevating what could have been a purely cynical cash-grab. Visually it's competent blockbuster filmmaking without much distinctive flair. The film doesn't bring anything truly new to either the superhero origin story or the Power Rangers mythology, and its ending devolves into the generic CGI spectacle it had been trying to subvert for much of its runtime.
