Basic Instinct 2 (2006)

Quartile rating: 5/10 · 1 rating

Novelist Catherine Tramell is once again in trouble with the law, and Scotland Yard appoints psychiatrist Dr. Michael Glass to evaluate her. Though, like Detective Nick Curran before him, Glass is entranced by Tramell and lured into a seductive game.

The Quartile Take

Basic Instinct 2 is a largely unnecessary sequel that recycles the original's formula with diminishing returns. The plot rehashes the same seductive-suspect game without the tension or surprise of the first film, making it feel derivative and predictable. Sharon Stone reprises her role but the chemistry and intrigue that made the original compelling are absent, and Michael Glass is a weak substitute protagonist. The London setting provides some visual interest and the cinematography is competently glossy, but it can't disguise the formulaic nature of the script. Novelty scores very low as it essentially copies the original's playbook without adding anything distinctive. The ending is unsatisfying and telegraphed, lacking the genuine shock of its predecessor.
