Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating
Bruce Nolan toils as a "human interest" television reporter in Buffalo, NY, but despite his high ratings and the love of his beautiful girlfriend, Bruce remains unfulfilled. At the end of the worst day in his life, he angrily ridicules God — and the Almighty responds, endowing Bruce with all of His divine powers.
Bruce Almighty is a solid mid-tier comedy with a fun high-concept premise — a disgruntled man given God's powers — executed with Carrey's trademark physical comedy. The plot is serviceable but formulaic in its arc (selfish man learns humility and gratitude), hitting expected beats without much surprise. Carrey is energetic and watchable, Morgan Freeman brings effortless gravitas as God, and Jennifer Aniston is likable though underwritten. Cinematography is functional network-comedy level with nothing visually distinctive. The novelty is modest — the God-powers premise has some freshness and the religious comedy angle gives it a mild edge, but it doesn't push boundaries. The ending resolves neatly but predictably with the expected redemption and reconciliation, feeling safe rather than earned.
