European mercenaries searching for black powder become embroiled in the defense of the Great Wall of China against a horde of monstrous creatures.
The Great Wall is a visually ambitious blockbuster that blends Chinese historical epic with monster-movie spectacle, giving it a certain novelty in its fusion concept. Zhang Yimou's direction ensures solid cinematography with vibrant color-coded armies and sweeping wall vistas. However, the plot is thin and predictable, relying on clichéd fish-out-of-water beats and underdeveloped characters. The acting is serviceable at best, with Matt Damon's casting drawing criticism and most characters remaining one-dimensional. The ending resolves the conflict too neatly and without real stakes, undermining the buildup.
