Elvis: That's the Way It Is (1970)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

On July 31, 1970, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Elvis Presley staged a triumphant return to the concert stage from which he had been absent for almost a decade. His series of concerts broke all box office records and completely reenergized the career of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

The Quartile Take

This concert documentary captures Elvis at his peak live-performance power in 1970 Las Vegas. The 'plot' is minimal as expected for a concert doc—backstage glimpses and fan interviews pad the narrative thinly. But Elvis himself is electrifying, commanding the screen with charisma and vocal power that justifies a high Acting/Performance score. Cinematography is competent for its era, capturing the spectacle reasonably well without being visually inventive. Novelty is moderate—concert films existed, but the singular subject matter and the historical importance of Elvis's return to the stage give it some distinctiveness. The ending, like most concert films, simply concludes without dramatic resolution.
