A Woman Is a Woman (1961)

Longing for a baby, a stripper pursues another man in order to make her boyfriend jealous.

The Quartile Take

Godard's playful New Wave romcom is a sui generis achievement — a buoyant, self-aware deconstruction of the Hollywood musical shot in vivid Eastmancolor by Raoul Coutard. Anna Karina is luminous and the three-way chemistry with Belmondo and Brialy crackles. The reflexive, fourth-wall-breaking style and jazz-punctuated Legrand score make it unmistakably singular. The plot itself is slight and its resolution feels a touch pat, but the sheer cinematic invention elevates every frame.
