Justice League: Gods and Monsters (2015)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

In an alternate universe, very different versions of DC's Trinity fight against the government after they are framed for an embassy bombing.

The Quartile Take

Gods and Monsters earns strong Novelty marks for its genuinely bold alternate-universe reimagining of DC's Trinity — a brutal Superman as Zod's son, a vampire Batman, and a New Gods-derived Wonder Woman — giving the film a distinctly dark, morally ambiguous tone rarely seen in animated superhero fare. The plot is serviceable but somewhat formulaic in its conspiracy/framing structure, and the ending resolves things competently without being especially memorable. Acting is solid for a DC animated feature with a capable voice cast. Cinematography (visual direction) is above average for the medium, with stylized dark aesthetics that suit the tone, though not quite exceptional.
