High school professor Guido is a hopeless romantic whose life falls apart after his girlfriend leaves him. Paolo, a former student of his, helps him in getting out of his depression for a better chance to become a PE teacher himself.
Ma che bella sorpresa is a fairly standard Italian romantic comedy with a predictable premise about heartbreak and recovery. The plot follows well-worn territory of the lovesick protagonist being helped by an unlikely companion, offering little narrative surprise. Acting is serviceable with some charm from the leads but nothing exceptional. Cinematography is functional and unremarkable for the genre. The film lacks real distinctiveness or a fresh voice, feeling largely derivative of similar Italian comedies. The ending provides modest emotional satisfaction consistent with the genre conventions.
