A rogue band of resistance fighters unite for a mission to steal the Death Star plans and bring a new hope to the galaxy.
Rogue One distinguishes itself within the Star Wars universe by committing to a grittier, war-film aesthetic that pays off handsomely in its final act. The cinematography — particularly the Battle of Scarif — is visually spectacular and among the franchise's best, with a real sense of scale and chaos. The ending is genuinely bold for a blockbuster, killing off all its protagonists and delivering emotional weight rarely seen in franchise filmmaking. Acting is solid but uneven; Felicity Jones and Diego Luna do well, though some supporting characters feel underdeveloped. The plot is functional and serviceable but suffers from a disjointed first half with too many location jumps. Novelty is moderate — it's a spin-off that carves its own tone but remains firmly within established Star Wars mythology without reinventing the wheel.
