The Crush (1993)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A precocious and obsessive teenager develops a crush on a naive writer with harrowing consequences.

The Quartile Take

The Crush is a serviceable early-90s erotic thriller that leans heavily on familiar Fatal Attraction-style obsession tropes applied to a teenage antagonist. Alicia Silverstone's debut is genuinely striking and energetic, elevating what would otherwise be a formulaic genre entry. The plot hits predictable beats — escalating obsession, framed protagonist, climactic confrontation — without much subversion. Cinematography is flat and TV-movie-esque, offering little visual distinction. The ending is conventional and tidy, resolving tensions in a by-the-numbers fashion. Novelty is limited; the Lolita-meets-thriller concept had precedent and the execution doesn't bring a singular voice to the material.
