A young street-smart, Nathan Drake and his wisecracking partner Victor “Sully” Sullivan embark on a dangerous pursuit of “the greatest treasure never found” while also tracking clues that may lead to Nathan’s long-lost brother.
Uncharted is a competent but formulaic video game adaptation that follows well-worn treasure-hunt adventure tropes without adding much originality. The plot is predictable and overly convoluted in places, leaning on familiar beats lifted from Indiana Jones and National Treasure. Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg have decent chemistry and carry the film watchably, but neither delivers a standout performance. Cinematography is serviceable with some fun action set pieces — particularly the cargo-plane sequence — but nothing visually distinctive. Novelty is low as it treads well-trodden video-game-adaptation and treasure-hunt territory with little unique voice or craft. The ending resolves things neatly but without much impact or surprise, setting up a sequel in a fairly uninspired way.
