It Takes Two (1995)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Identical 9-year-olds from very different backgrounds: orphaned Amanda and wealthy Alyssa meet at summer camp and decide to switch places -- and play matchmaker between Alyssa's dad, Roger, and the kind social worker who cares for Amanda.

The Quartile Take

A fairly standard riff on The Parent Trap formula transplanted to a class-divide setting, It Takes Two hits familiar beats without much surprise. The Olsen twins bring genuine charm and chemistry that elevates the material above its formulaic script, and the supporting cast (Kirstie Alley, Steve Guttenberg) is likable if unremarkable. Cinematography is functional family-film fare with nothing distinctive. The plot is derivative and predictable throughout, leaning heavily on an established template. The ending delivers the expected warm resolution that satisfies on an emotional level despite zero surprise.
