When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Chinese Army to defend the country from Huns, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. She is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. Disguised as a man by the name of Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her innermost strength and embrace her true potential.
The 2020 live-action Mulan offers visually stunning cinematography with sweeping Chinese landscapes and vibrant production design that genuinely elevates it. However, the plot strips away much of the animated film's charm while adding a somewhat muddled chi-powers fantasy element that weakens narrative coherence. The acting is competent — Yifei Liu brings stoic grace but limited emotional range, while Gong Li is a highlight. The film lacks novelty as a live-action remake that neither faithfully recreates the beloved original nor forges a bold enough new identity, feeling derivative of both the 1998 animation and generic wuxia films. The ending resolves too neatly and without sufficient emotional payoff, undercutting the dramatic weight built throughout.
