Hitchcock/Truffaut (2015)

The Quartile Take

A solid documentary that draws on archival recordings of the famous Hitchcock-Truffaut interview sessions and features commentary from contemporary filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, and Wes Anderson. The talking-heads format is competent but conventional, and while the subject matter is inherently compelling for cinephiles, the film doesn't push documentary form in any remarkable direction. The ending feels somewhat abrupt and lacks the resonant closing note the material deserves. Novelty is moderate — the subject is rich and the archival material is rare, but the execution follows familiar documentary conventions.
