Devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchannon butts heads with a brash new recruit. Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay.
Baywatch (2017) follows the well-worn 'mismatched partners uncover crime' template with little surprise or wit. The plot is formulaic and thin, relying heavily on the nostalgia of the IP rather than crafting something compelling. Acting is serviceable but uneven — Johnson and Efron have moments of chemistry but the script rarely gives them or the supporting cast much to work with. Cinematography is a modest bright spot, with glossy, sun-drenched beach visuals that at least look attractive on screen. Novelty is low — it's a by-the-numbers TV-to-film adaptation that doesn't reinvent anything, leaning on crude humor and action beats seen in countless other R-rated comedies. The ending resolves predictably with little emotional payoff, wrapping up the villain plot in a forgettable action sequence.
