When his new album fails to sell records, pop/rap superstar Conner4real goes into a major tailspin and watches his celebrity high life begin to collapse. He'll try anything to bounce back, anything except reuniting with his old rap group The Style Boyz.
Popstar is a gleefully absurdist mockumentary from The Lonely Island that skewers celebrity culture and the music industry with sharp, committed parody. The plot hits familiar mockumentary beats without much structural surprise, and the ending feels a bit too tidy and conventional for a film that elsewhere revels in chaos. Acting is solid across the board — Samberg is fully committed and the celebrity cameos are well-deployed — but the ensemble rarely transcends the joke. Cinematography faithfully apes the documentary aesthetic without doing anything particularly inventive beyond functional parody mimicry. Where the film earns its keep is in novelty: the songs are genuinely clever and catchy, the satire is pointed and funny, and The Lonely Island's specific comedic voice gives it a distinctly irreverent flavor that keeps it from feeling interchangeable with other music mockumentaries.
