Jenny's Wedding (2015)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

Jenny Farrell is getting married. But how will her straight-laced family react when they find out that the woman they thought was their daughter’s roommate is actually her fiancée? As the old-fashioned Farrells attempt to come to terms with the prospect of a surprise daughter-in-law, they face a difficult choice: either adapt with the times or risk being left behind.

The Quartile Take

Jenny's Wedding is a well-intentioned but formulaic LGBT family drama that covers well-trodden coming-out territory without much freshness or cinematic ambition. The plot follows a predictable arc of family resistance and eventual acceptance, offering little narrative surprise. Acting is the relative highlight, with Katherine Heigl and Tom Wilkinson delivering committed performances that elevate fairly thin material. Cinematography is flat and TV-movie in quality, lacking visual distinction. Novelty is low — the film recycles familiar beats from LGBT acceptance narratives without a distinctive voice, tone, or perspective to set it apart. The ending resolves tidily and predictably, providing closure but no emotional resonance beyond the conventional.
