Robert McCall, who serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed, embarks on a relentless, globe-trotting quest for vengeance when his former partner is murdered.
The Equalizer 2 is a competent but largely by-the-numbers sequel. Denzel Washington elevates the material with his commanding screen presence, bringing genuine charisma and weight to McCall, which is the film's strongest asset. The cinematography is serviceable with some atmospheric shots, particularly during the hurricane finale, but nothing particularly distinctive. The plot recycles familiar revenge thriller beats — the mentor-turned-target, corrupt CIA operatives, and a climactic showdown — without adding much new to the franchise or the genre. The ending, set during a hurricane which offers a visually interesting backdrop, ultimately resolves in a predictable and unsatisfying manner. As a sequel, it offers little that distinguishes it from its predecessor or the broader vigilante-thriller genre, making Novelty appropriately low.
