The Promise (2016)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Set during the last days of the Ottoman Empire, a love triangle develops between Mikael, a brilliant medical student, the beautiful and sophisticated artist Ana, and Chris, a renowned American journalist based in Paris.

The Quartile Take

The Promise tackles the Armenian Genocide with ambitious scope and genuine historical importance, but its romantic love triangle framework feels conventional and undermines the weightier subject matter. The acting from Oscar Isaac and Christian Bale is solid, though Charlotte Le Bon's Ana feels underwritten as the object of desire rather than a fully realized character. The cinematography captures the Ottoman landscape and period detail competently without being visually distinctive. Its novelty lies in being one of the very few major Hollywood productions to directly address the Armenian Genocide, lending it genuine singularity despite a formulaic romantic structure. The ending, while emotionally intended to be moving, feels rushed and unsatisfying, failing to fully honor the tragic historical events it depicts.
