Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating
A radio journalist and his technician get in over their heads when they hatch a scheme to fake their own kidnapping during a rebel uprising in South America and hide out in New York instead.
Special Correspondents is a broadly forgettable Netflix comedy that squanders a decent satirical premise. The plot about faking a foreign kidnapping while hiding in New York has comic potential but is executed without sharp wit or escalating tension. Ricky Gervais and Eric Bana have little chemistry and both seem miscast, while the supporting ensemble is underutilized. The visual style is flat and functional, with no distinctive cinematographic choices. The central conceit, while mildly amusing on paper, recalls sharper media-satire comedies and never develops its idea into something distinctly its own. The ending wraps up too neatly and without earned laughs, leaving the film feeling like a minor misfire across the board.
