The Witness (2015)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A brother's journey to unravel the truth about the mythic death and little known life of Kitty Genovese, who was reportedly murdered in front of 38 witnesses and has become the face of urban apathy.

The Quartile Take

The Witness earns high Novelty for dismantling one of America's most enduring urban legends—the '38 silent witnesses' myth—through a deeply personal investigative lens. Bill Genovese's quest to understand both the fabricated narrative and his sister's actual life gives the documentary an emotional authenticity rare in the genre. The reframing of Kitty as a real person rather than a symbol is genuinely distinctive. Acting is less applicable but interviews vary in quality and the brother's on-camera presence, while moving, is uneven. Cinematography is competent but functional rather than visually striking. The ending carries emotional weight but doesn't fully resolve the investigative or emotional threads in a satisfying way.
