The Quartile Take

Resident Evil: Afterlife is a by-the-numbers entry in an already formulaic franchise. The plot recycles familiar post-apocalyptic beats with little invention — survivors trapped, Umbrella scheming, Alice fighting zombies — offering minimal narrative depth or surprise. Acting is functional at best, with Milla Jovovich doing capable action-hero work but the supporting cast largely underdeveloped. The cinematography gets a modest bump for its slick, stylized 3D action sequences shot by Paul W.S. Anderson, which deliver some visually competent slow-motion set pieces even if they prioritize spectacle over substance. Novelty is low — it's a sequel that largely retreads the series' established formula without a distinctive voice or fresh conception. The ending sets up yet another sequel in a predictable cliffhanger fashion, adding little resolution or emotional payoff.
