The Grinch hatches a scheme to ruin Christmas when the residents of Whoville plan their annual holiday celebration.
The 2018 Grinch is a polished but formulaic retread of the classic Dr. Seuss story, adding little to what came before. The animation is technically competent and visually bright, with an appealing Whoville aesthetic, but it lacks the distinctive visual identity that would elevate it above typical Illumination fare. The voice cast, led by Benedict Cumberbatch, is serviceable but the performances rarely rise above adequate. The plot follows the well-worn source material without meaningful additions or subversions, and the ending delivers the expected heartwarming resolution with no surprises. As a remake of an already-adapted story, its novelty is low — it feels like a product rather than a creative vision.
