A behind-the-scenes mockumentary of Tropic Thunder.
Rain of Madness is a mockumentary parody accompanying Tropic Thunder, directed by Justin Theroux in character as Tropic Thunder's fictional German documentarian Jan Utivich. It commits admirably to its joke, maintaining character consistency and satirizing both behind-the-scenes docs and the pompous auteur filmmaker archetype. The acting-in-character from the cast is solid and occasionally very funny. However, as an ancillary piece to a bigger film, its plot structure is thin and episodic, the cinematography is deliberately rough and functional (fitting the mockumentary style but not remarkable), and the ending simply fades out without much resolution. Its novelty is decent as a committed meta-joke but it is ultimately derivative of Tropic Thunder itself and the broader mockumentary tradition.
