A breathtaking portrait of Earth from space, providing a unique perspective and increased understanding of our planet and galaxy as never seen before. Made in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the film features stunning footage of our magnificent blue planet — and the effects humanity has had on it over time — captured by the astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
A Beautiful Planet is primarily a visual experience rather than a narrative one, so Plot and Acting are secondary concerns — the documentary structure is serviceable but thin, relying on astronaut voiceovers rather than deep storytelling. The cinematography, however, is genuinely exceptional: time-lapse and aerial footage captured from the ISS delivers some of the most stunning imagery of Earth ever committed to an IMAX screen, earning a well-deserved 4. Novelty sits at 3 — while the ISS vantage point is spectacular, the 'Earth from space' documentary genre (Hubble, Earth, etc.) is established enough that this doesn't feel entirely singular despite its beauty. The ending is competent, landing on the expected environmental message with emotional resonance but no particular surprise.
