An exploration of the heavy metal scene in Los Angeles, with particular emphasis on glam metal. It features concert footage and interviews of legendary heavy metal and hard rock bands and artists such as Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Megadeth, Motörhead, Ozzy Osbourne and W.A.S.P..
Penelope Spheeris's follow-up to her punk rock documentary turns its lens on the LA glam metal scene with a distinctly anthropological eye. The interviews are legendarily candid — Ozzy Osbourne pouring orange juice while standing on his head is one of documentary filmmaking's great moments of absurdist revelation. The film's novelty is high: it captures a subculture at its peak with a satirical but non-condescending gaze, letting subjects expose themselves through unguarded honesty. Cinematography is functional but effective, mixing gritty verité with concert footage. 'Acting' in a documentary sense refers to subject authenticity and interview presence — some subjects are compelling, others painfully self-unaware (intentionally so). The narrative arc is loose, ending more on mood than resolution, which suits the material but lacks punch.
