The Quartile Take

Oceans (2010) is a visually stunning French nature documentary from directors Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud, best known for its breathtaking underwater cinematography that captures marine life in extraordinary detail and intimacy. The camerawork is genuinely exceptional — some of the most immersive underwater footage ever committed to film, earning a well-above-average score. Novelty is above average given the unique poetic, almost impressionistic approach Perrin and Cluzaud bring compared to standard nature documentaries, though it follows in the tradition of their earlier Winged Migration. The narrative structure (Plot) is loose and meditative rather than story-driven, which is intentional but limits its dramatic coherence, landing below average as a conventional narrative. Acting is not applicable in the traditional sense — the human framing device is minimal and unremarkable. The ending delivers a reasonably effective ecological message without being particularly surprising or resonant, landing above average but not exceptional.
