First Man (2018)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

A look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969.

The Quartile Take

First Man takes a deliberately intimate, psychological approach to Neil Armstrong's story, anchored by Ryan Gosling's restrained and deeply internalized performance and Roger Deakins-caliber cinematography from Linus Sandgren — the visceral, claustrophobic cockpit sequences are genuinely exceptional. Chazelle frames the moon landing not as triumphant spectacle but as quiet, grief-laden catharsis, which is admirably distinctive. However, the plot meanders somewhat in its earthbound segments, and the emotional through-line (grief over daughter Karen) is handled with more subtlety than payoff. The ending, while poignant, feels slightly withholding rather than fully earned. Its approach is fresh within the biopic-space genre but not wholly singular.
