Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating
An American hypochondriac who is working as a baggage handler is forced to confront his fears when a British teenager with a terminal illness enlists him to help her carry out her eccentric bucket list.
Then Came You is a competent but fairly formulaic terminal illness coming-of-age dramedy. The premise of a hypochondriac forced to confront mortality through a dying teen's bucket list has warmth and some charm, but it treads well-worn ground established by films like The Fault in Our Stars and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. The acting is serviceable and likable, particularly from the leads, but nothing transcends the material. Cinematography is functional and unremarkable. The story hits expected emotional beats with its ending feeling earned but unsurprising. Novelty suffers most as the film recycles familiar tropes of the quirky-dying-girl subgenre without a truly distinctive voice or vision.
