American tourist Frank meets mysterious British woman Elise on the train to Venice. Romance seems to bud, but there's more to her than meets the eye.
The Tourist is a glossy but hollow thriller that coasts on the star power of Depp and Jolie without delivering satisfying suspense or romance. The Venice setting is visually appealing but not exceptionally framed. The twist ending feels contrived rather than earned, undermining the already thin plot. The premise of mistaken identity and cat-and-mouse intrigue is well-worn territory executed in a fairly by-the-numbers fashion. The leads have surprisingly little chemistry, though both bring professional competence to underwritten roles.
