Fire at Sea (2016)

Capturing life on the Italian island of Lampedusa, a frontline in the European migrant crisis.

The Quartile Take

Gianfranco Rosi's observational documentary is a landmark of the form, weaving together the quiet rhythms of island life with the harrowing reality of the Mediterranean migrant crisis. The cinematography is extraordinary — intimate, patient, and visually arresting in its contrast of the mundane and the catastrophic. Its novelty lies in its wholly distinctive approach: refusing the conventions of talking-head journalism in favor of a poetic, slow-cinema immersion that makes it utterly singular. The 'acting' category is less applicable given the documentary format, though some subjects carry undeniable screen presence. The structural tension between young Samuele's daily life and the coast guard's grim work is compelling but occasionally uneven in pacing toward the end.
