Quartile rating: 5/10 · 1 rating

Gene, a multi-expressional emoji, sets out on a journey to become a normal emoji.

The Quartile Take

The Emoji Movie is widely regarded as one of the worst animated films in recent memory. Its plot is a shameless rehash of Wreck-It Ralph and Inside Out with no meaningful emotional core, substituting brand-name app cameos for genuine storytelling. The voice acting is competent but wasted on hollow characters. The animation is technically adequate but visually uninspired, leaning on garish colors rather than any distinctive visual language. The concept of emojis coming to life had modest novelty potential but is squandered in execution, amounting to little more than a feature-length advertisement. The ending resolves conflicts in the most predictable and unearned way imaginable, offering no satisfaction or resonance.
