Valhalla Rising (2009)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Scandinavia, 1,000 AD. For years, One Eye, a mute warrior of supernatural strength, has been held prisoner by the Norse chieftain Barde. Aided by Are, a boy slave, One Eye slays his captor and together he and Are escape, beginning a journey into the heart of darkness. On their flight, One Eye and Are board a Viking vessel, but the ship is soon engulfed by an endless fog that clears only as the crew sights an unknown land. As the new world reveals its secrets and the Vikings confront their terrible and bloody fate, One Eye discovers his true self.

The Quartile Take

Valhalla Rising is a deeply atmospheric, meditative slow-burn that prioritizes mood and imagery over conventional narrative. Refn's cinematography is genuinely exceptional — the bleak Scottish landscapes shot as if they were alien terrain, the blood-red color palettes, and the almost wordless visual storytelling place it well above average. Novelty is high: this is a singular, unmistakable film that blends Viking mythology, Herzogian journey-into-darkness, and surrealist horror in a way no other film quite replicates. The plot is deliberately sparse and elliptical — functional but not dramatically rich, earning an above-average rather than exceptional score. Acting is restrained and effective, with Mads Mikkelsen's near-silent performance iconic but the supporting cast limited in scope. The ending is divisive and often unsatisfying — it trails off into abstraction without sufficient payoff, feeling more like abandonment than resolution.
