Priest (2011)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

In an alternate world, humanity and vampires have warred for centuries. After the last Vampire War, the veteran Warrior Priest lives in obscurity with other humans inside one of the Church's walled cities. When the Priest's niece is kidnapped by vampires, the Priest breaks his vows to hunt them down. He is accompanied by the niece's boyfriend, who is a wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess.

The Quartile Take

Priest (2011) is a derivative post-apocalyptic vampire action film that blends familiar genre elements without distinguishing itself. The plot is a straightforward rescue mission wrapped in world-building that never fully delivers on its premise, borrowing liberally from westerns, manga aesthetics, and vampire mythology without synthesizing them into something compelling. The acting is workmanlike at best — Paul Bettany commits but the script gives him little to work with, and supporting players are largely wasted. Cinematography has some stylized moments and a decent visual palette for the dystopian cityscape and wastelands, earning a slight edge. Novelty is low as the film recycles familiar beats from superior genre entries. The ending sets up a sequel that never came, leaving the story feeling unresolved and unsatisfying.
