The Cyclone (1996)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

The everyday life of accountant Levante, his family and the other people of a small town in the Tuscan countryside is taken by storm by the serendipitous arrival of five gorgeous Spanish flamenco dancers.

The Quartile Take

A charming but slight Italian comedy from Leonardo Pieraccioni, 'The Cyclone' rides on warm Tuscan atmosphere and an amiable cast rather than a particularly inventive or polished plot. The premise — exotic dancers upending small-town life — is familiar territory, executed with local color and likable performances but little narrative depth or memorable resolution. The cinematography captures the Tuscan countryside pleasantly without being visually ambitious. Its novelty lies mainly in its distinctly Italian flavor and flamenco-meets-countryside charm, though the story mechanics are fairly conventional. The ending feels a touch abrupt and tidy. A crowd-pleasing regional hit that doesn't fully transcend its modest ambitions.
