Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating
At 40, Stephanie loses her job and is forced to move back in with her mother. She is welcomed with open arms to the joys of overheated apartment, Francis Cabrel playing on loop, Scrabble games and precious motherly advice on how to behave at the table and live her life.
Back to Mom's is a fairly conventional French comedy built on a familiar premise—adult child forced to return to the family home and navigate a clash of generations. The humor is competent and the mother-daughter dynamic has some warmth, but the plot follows a predictable arc without much surprise. Acting is serviceable with decent chemistry between the leads. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable, typical of mid-budget French comedies. Novelty is low as the concept is well-trodden territory with few distinguishing touches. The ending resolves things neatly but without much emotional payoff or originality.
