The Legend of Al, John and Jack (2002)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Hapless Depression-era gangsters Al, John and Jack find out their boss wants to get rid of them and come up with a plan to sell him to the FBI, but Al's short-term memory loss could make it difficult.

The Quartile Take

This Croatian gangster comedy parody blends Depression-era American mob aesthetics with absurdist humor centered on a protagonist with short-term memory loss. The premise is reasonably inventive for its regional context and the comedic trio dynamic works well enough, but the plot relies on fairly familiar heist-and-betrayal mechanics elevated by the memory gimmick. Acting is serviceable with solid comic timing from the leads. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable for a mid-budget European production. The ending resolves predictably without a particularly satisfying or surprising payoff, keeping it squarely average.
