Kill Command (2016)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

Set in a near future, technology-reliant society that pits man against killing machines. Against this backdrop an elite army unit is helicoptered to a remote, off-the-grid island training facility. What starts out as a simple training exercise for Captain Bukes and his tight-knit unit, descends into a terrifying battle to the death, as the marines discover the island is overrun by an enemy that transcends the human concept of evil.

The Quartile Take

Kill Command is a competent but derivative sci-fi action thriller that leans heavily on familiar man-vs-machine tropes without meaningfully subverting or elevating them. The plot follows a well-worn template — elite soldiers stranded and hunted by superior robotic predators — reminiscent of Predator and countless others, offering little narrative surprise. The acting is serviceable, with Thure Lindhardt holding the lead reasonably well and the ensemble delivering credible soldier camaraderie, keeping it above the baseline. Cinematography makes decent use of the forest setting and the robots are visually solid for the budget, though nothing stands out as particularly inspired. Novelty is low; the premise is thoroughly recycled and the execution doesn't find a distinctive enough voice or twist to differentiate it. The ending wraps up bleakly but predictably, failing to deliver a memorable payoff or meaningful resonance beyond a standard survival-horror conclusion.
