The Quartile Take

Patriots Day is a competent, well-intentioned procedural thriller that reconstructs the Boston Marathon bombing and subsequent manhunt with commendable detail and emotional sincerity. The plot is tightly structured and gripping, benefiting from the inherent tension of the real events, though the composite protagonist (Mark Wahlberg's Tommy Saunders) feels somewhat contrived as a dramatic device. The ensemble acting is solid across the board, with standout work from John Goodman and J.K. Simmons, though nothing reaches truly exceptional heights. Peter Berg's cinematography is functional and urgent, employing a docudrama aesthetic that suits the material without being visually distinctive. Novelty is limited — this is largely a by-the-numbers 'based on true events' procedural in the mold of Berg's other docudramas (Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon), and offers little that reinvents the genre. The ending, blending dramatization with real survivor testimonials, delivers genuine emotional resonance and is arguably the film's most affecting element.
