The Quartile Take

Tunnel is a solid South Korean disaster-thriller that uses the premise of a man trapped underground to explore media sensationalism, bureaucratic incompetence, and human resilience. The plotting is competent and emotionally grounded but follows a fairly predictable survival arc. Acting from Ha Jung-woo is earnest and carries the film, though supporting performances are functional rather than exceptional. Cinematography is serviceable — the confined tunnel space is used effectively but not cinematically distinctive. The film's novelty lies mainly in its sharp satirical commentary on Korean society and media circus around disasters, giving it a slightly above-average distinctiveness compared to typical survival thrillers. The ending is bittersweet and thematically consistent but not especially surprising.
