Critters (1986)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Carnivorous aliens arrive unannounced at a Kansas family farm; two intergalactic bounty hunters soon follow, determined to blow them off the planet.

The Quartile Take

Critters is a cheerful B-movie that rode the mid-80s creature-feature wave alongside Gremlins, offering modest but functional plotting around a Kansas farm family besieged by ravenous alien furballs. The plot is serviceable but thin and derivative of better genre entries. Acting is B-movie standard — earnest but unremarkable across the board. Cinematography is competent for its budget, making decent use of rural locations and practical creature effects that hold up reasonably well. Novelty earns a mild edge for its dual-threat concept (alien creatures plus shapeshifting bounty hunters) and its irreverent tone blending comedy and horror, even if it clearly shadows Gremlins. The ending is abrupt and unsatisfying, largely functioning as a setup for sequels rather than delivering genuine resolution.
