Piper (2016)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

A mother bird tries to teach her little one how to find food by herself. In the process, she encounters a traumatic experience that she must overcome in order to survive.

The Quartile Take

Piper is a Pixar short celebrated above all for its breathtaking photorealistic animation and cinematography — the sand, water, and feather detail are genuinely exceptional. The story is simple and familiar (overcoming fear, growing up), and without traditional dialogue 'acting' is minimal, conveyed through character animation rather than voice performance. The concept of a sandpiper fledgling learning to forage is charming but not wildly original in premise, though the execution and visual craft give it a distinctive Pixar polish. The ending is warm and satisfying without being surprising.
