Combining his trademark wit and self-deprecating humor with original music, Bo Burnham offers up his unique twist on life in this stand-up special about life, death, sexuality, hypocrisy, mental illness and Pringles cans.
Bo Burnham's Make Happy is a boundary-pushing stand-up special that blurs the lines between comedy, performance art, and musical theatre. The cinematography is genuinely exceptional for the format, with theatrical lighting and staging that elevates it well above typical stand-up specials. Burnham's performance is singular — his ability to weave sharp social commentary, self-referential anxiety, and genuine musical craft into a cohesive live show is highly distinctive. The novelty is earned through its unique execution rather than mere concept. The ending, while emotionally raw and memorable with 'Are You Happy,' is somewhat expected given the special's thesis. The 'plot' of a stand-up special is inherently limited in scope, earning a solid but not exceptional mark.
