Mary Poppins Returns (2018)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Mary Poppins returns to the Banks family and helps them evade grave dangers by taking them on magical, musical adventures.

The Quartile Take

Mary Poppins Returns is a competent but largely unnecessary sequel that mirrors the structure of the original so closely it feels more like a remake than a continuation. The plot is thin and formulaic, recycling the episodic magical-adventure format without adding meaningful emotional depth or fresh stakes. Emily Blunt's performance is the standout — confident and distinctive enough to avoid direct comparison to Julie Andrews — and the supporting cast (Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Meryl Streep) brings charm. Cinematography is polished and colorful, particularly during the animated sequence, but never transcends solid craft. Novelty is low given how deliberately it retraces the original's footsteps in tone, structure, and set-pieces. The ending resolves predictably and sentimentally without earning its emotional payoff.
