Laura, a Spanish woman living in Buenos Aires, returns to her hometown outside Madrid with her Argentinian husband and children. However, the trip is upset by unexpected events that bring secrets into the open.
Asghar Farhadi's Spanish-language thriller benefits enormously from powerhouse performances by Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, whose chemistry and emotional depth elevate familiar material. The kidnapping premise and slow unraveling of small-town secrets is classic Farhadi territory but feels somewhat recycled from his earlier work like A Separation and The Past. Cinematography is competent and sun-drenched but unremarkable. The ending is the film's weakest point — it resolves in a frustratingly ambiguous and anticlimactic way that left many viewers unsatisfied, feeling like a deflation rather than a meaningful open conclusion.
