Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Video game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz must risk it all by traveling to the World Wide Web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope's video game, Sugar Rush. In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet — the netizens — to help navigate their way, including an entrepreneur named Yesss, who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of trend-making site BuzzzTube.

The Quartile Take

Ralph Breaks the Internet is a visually inventive and consistently funny sequel that largely succeeds on the charm of its central friendship. The internet world-building is creative and the Disney Princess scene is a genuine highlight of wit and self-awareness. However, the plot leans heavily on familiar 'friendship tested, friendship restored' beats, and the ending—while emotionally sincere—feels somewhat abrupt and unearned in its resolution of Ralph's insecurity arc. Acting is warm and capable but unremarkable. Cinematography is lively and colorful but functional rather than artistically ambitious. Overall a solid, enjoyable animated sequel that doesn't quite match the original's freshness.
