The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Siblings Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter step through a magical wardrobe and find the land of Narnia. There, they discover a charming, once peaceful kingdom that has been plunged into eternal winter by the evil White Witch, Jadis. Aided by the wise and magnificent lion, Aslan, the children lead Narnia into a spectacular, climactic battle to be free of the Witch's glacial powers forever.

The Quartile Take

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a competent and visually handsome adaptation of C.S. Lewis's beloved novel. The cinematography and production design are genuine highlights — the wintry Narnia landscape, Aslan's camp, and the battle sequences are all impressively realized on a grand scale. The plot faithfully follows the source material but the screenplay adds little that feels fresh, and the allegorical depth of the book is somewhat flattened for mainstream family consumption. The child actors are serviceable but uneven, with Georgie Henley (Lucy) being the standout. Novelty is limited — the film largely follows the post-Lord of the Rings fantasy epic template and breaks no new ground in conception or execution. The ending delivers the expected triumphant resolution but feels rushed, particularly the epilogue, and lacks the emotional punch the material could have achieved.
